Sauna: Infrared and Traditional

A hot room, a bench and a timer — with a real difference between the two common types.

A traditional sauna heats the air in the room, usually with a stove and stones, and often allows water on the rocks to raise humidity. It feels hot on your skin immediately. An infrared sauna uses emitters that warm your body more directly, so the air in the cabin stays cooler while you still end up sweating. Neither is a better version of the other. They feel different, and people usually have a clear preference once they have tried both.

A session is simple. You sit or lie on a bench, usually with a towel, for as long as you are comfortable. You leave when you have had enough rather than when a clock says so. Drink water. Do not use a sauna after drinking alcohol. Sit up slowly and step out carefully, because standing quickly out of heat is how people get lightheaded.

Heat raises heart rate and affects blood pressure, which is the part the marketing skips. If you have a heart condition, a blood-pressure condition, are pregnant, or take medication that affects your heart, circulation or ability to sweat, clear sauna use with your doctor before you start. We are not going to tell you what a sauna does for inflammation, sleep or metabolism, because that is not ours to claim.
